Birdsville’s population swells from 100 to about 7,000 people for the two-day Birdsville Races in far south-west Queensland, where the winner gets the coveted Birdsville Cup. Visitors converge from all parts of Australia and the world on the first Saturday in September for the annual event. The event is held on Friday/Saturday.

Three Day Tour including Birdsville:
The most popular three-day tour is known as “The Taste of the Outback”. It begins at Moorabbin and first stop at Broken Hill for a quick refuel and coffee. Then at Innamincka enjoy lunch which includes a cruise on Cooper Creek. From there a 1 hour flight gets you to your overnight destination of Birdsville and stay overnight at the famous Birdsville Hotel. Next day after breakfast a 2 hours low level flight to Lake Eyre will allow you to enjoy the beauty of the Diamantina River, Goyder Lagoon and the Warburton River. Landing at Muloorina Station you can enjoy the views of the enormous flat white salt lake. Next a short flight over the Flinders Ranges will take you to Balcanoona. Here, during late afternoon, the colours on the Flinders Ranges will create an illusion. And there you will spend your second night at the Arkaroola Wilderness Resort. The last day starts with the famous 4 hour Ridge Top Tour to Siller’s Lookout in the Northern Flinders Ranges before arriving back at Moorabbin.
Four Day Tour including Birdsville:
The extended 4 day trip is similar, but adds Lake Mungo and Broken Hill and then comes back through Parachilna and the central Flinders Ranges. This tour is also known as “The Taste of the Outback”. Taking off from Moorabbin it’s a 1.8 hour flight to Lake Mungo National Park. This is a World Heritage site with Aboriginal history of at least 42,000 years. Then a short flight will take you to Broken Hill. Your first night is at the historic Royal Exchange Hotel. On day 2 you will reach Birdsville via Dig Tree, Cooper Creek and Innamincka. On day 3 a 2 hour flight will take you to Muloorina Station and you will enjoy the beauty of Lake Eyre. Then after lunch a 50 min flight will take you to Parachilna in the central Flinders Ranges where you’ll be overnighting at the Prairie Hotel. After breakfast on the fourth day your tour of the central Flinders Ranges will commence. Then on the way home, experience the airial view of the Wilpena Pound before arriving back at Moorabbin.
