A Weekend in Strahan

Depart Moorabbin Airport at 8.00 am, arriving in beautiful Strahan at 9.30 am. Begin with a drive along the very edge of the West Coast between sand dunes and the wild beauty of Southern Ocean Beach. Quite a sedentary adventure, all from the comfort of a 4WD! Morning tea on the beach, marvel at the fact that if you sailed straight, the next land mass would be South America.

A little time to explore the quaint shops and galleries in Strahan township.

Following lunch embark on a stunning 2.5-hour journey aboard the iconic West Coast Wilderness Railway in the premium Wilderness Carriage, with all the bells and whistles. Travel deep into cool rainforests, journey over the Iron Bridge at Teepookana, disembark at Lower Landing Station on the King River for a short nature walk and honey tasting.

Later, check into your harbour view room at Strahan Village. Time to relax and refresh, enjoy the peace and tranquillity from your balcony. Dinner this evening is at View 42°, located in the hotel. Indulge in a Seafood Buffet (alternatives available) with fabulous views.

Today, head out to explore Queenstown with its moonscape and orange waters of the Queens River, a legacy of mining in the area. Tour a timber and gold mine or go underground at a copper mine. Walk through ancient Huon pines and explore Lake Margaret—Australia’s oldest operating power station. Lunch at the restored art deco Paragon Theatre, originally opened in 1933, with floors hand-painted to resemble marble.

Later in the afternoon, it’s a short stroll down to the waterfront to see Australia’s longest-running play, ‘The Ship That Never Was’, a dramatic and hilarious true story about the last great escape from Sarah Island.

Dine on authentic dishes crafted with the freshest produce at Risby Cove Restaurant on the water’s edge. This was the former site of the Risby Bros. Huon pine sawmill. With splendid views, savour the ever-changing water reflections and sunset.

Cruise deep into the wilderness aboard Spirit of the Wild. Glide through the pristine waters of Macquarie Harbour and the Franklin-Gordon Wild Rivers National Park. Enjoy the luxurious Premier Upper Deck with full-length windows to soak in the magnificent views while grazing on chef-prepared food and Tasmanian wines. During your six-hour cruise, stretch your legs on two accessible walking tours: at Heritage Landing, wander the rainforest boardwalk, and on Sarah Island, explore the ruins of a penal colony.

Then just like that, from water to the air, transfer to Strahan Airport for the short flight home, arriving Moorabbin Airport around 5.30 pm feeling relaxed and enriched!
