Ancient Flinders Ranges
The Flinders Ranges of South Australia are unlike any other you will see. Characterised by towering ancient cliffs, deep craters and magnificent red river gums, it is like you have entered another world, lost in time.
Scenery, animals, stars, fossils and friendly locals – a few of the reasons why we believe it is one of Australia’s best kept secrets.
Tour Itinerary: Ancient Flinders Ranges
Depart for the magnificent Ikara-Flinders Ranges National Park. Prior to landing, your pilot will dip down for a scenic flight over the awe-inspiring Wilpena Pound.
Learn about life on a commercial sheep station on an afternoon station tour. Rawnsley Park runs approximately 2,000 Dohne sheep. Tour the shearing shed to see how the wool is sorted and baled, before visiting the water points.
Watch a brilliant Flinders Ranges sunset overlooking the ramparts of Wilpena Pound and the stunning Chace Range, glass of sparkling and gourmet canapé in hand.
Overnight: Rawnsley Park Station, Prelinna or Chace Holiday Unit
A late start this morning allows you to go for a walk on one of Rawnsley’s marked walking trails to check out the native flora and fauna, or maybe just sit on your veranda and relax in the tranquillity of the Australian bush.
Fly north to Balcanoona and transfer to Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary in the ruggedly spectacular northern Flinders Ranges. Following lunch, join Arkaroola’s signature Ridgetop tour, travelling in a specially constructed open-top 4WD vehicle. Enjoy breathtaking views as the 4WD travels along the ridgetop track, culminating at Sillers Peak.
After dinner when the skies light up, head to the Dodwell Observatory with Doug for a tour of the universe from a location that provides some of the best viewing conditions in Australia.
Overnight: Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary, Mawson Room
Following breakfast, fly from Arkaroola to Blinman in the heart of the Flinders Ranges. Board a 4WD for a brilliant afternoon exploring one of the Flinders Ranges most stunning gorges, Brachina Gorge National Park, which meanders its way through sharp sawtooth ridges of resistant quartzite.
On to Parachilna and the historic Prairie Hotel, built in 1876, an icon of the Flinders Ranges.
Overnight: Prairie Hotel, Deluxe Room
This morning tour the extraordinary Ediacara Foundation fossil site at Jane and Ross Fargher’s Nilpena Station (the operators of the Prairie Hotel).
This is one of the most significant fossil sites in the world and was featured in David Attenborough’s ‘Life on Earth‘. The Ediacaran fossils preserve entire ecosystems, enabling scientists to understand what life on earth was like in its earliest forms.
Visit the stunning Parachilna Gorge on the way back to Blinman for the flight back to your home city.
