Flying the High Country

Departing Moorabbin at 8.45 am, fly to Jindabyne, the gateway to the NSW snowfields in the Australian Alps. A local guide will meet you for your day's adventures. Start with morning tea in the old town centre of Jindabyne. You'll see the lake created by Jindabyne Dam, stand on top of that dam and learn about the Snowy Hydro Scheme, for which the original town was flooded and moved up the hill.

Drive out to Charlotte Pass, Australia's oldest and highest ski resort. Walk along the snow gum boardwalk, view Mount Kosciuszko (weather permitting) and picnic by the river, surrounded by mountains, stunning wildflowers and an alpine forest. A local fly-fisherman will join you and exhibit the skills of his craft.

Head back to Thredbo Valley and your accommodation. You'll have a few hours to relax and explore this beautiful area, with mountains and forests overlooking the resort.

2 nights: Lake Crackenback Resort

Travel to Thredbo, the award-winning ski resort that's almost as popular in summer as winter for bushwalking, biking and all manner of adventures. Hop on the chairlift to the top of Crackenback, with incredible views across the valley. Wander along the boardwalk to the Mt Kosciuszko lookout and replenish your energy with morning tea at Eagles Nest. Back down in the village, take a gentle walk around the golf course and river to see some of the local wildlife.

Departing Thredbo, drop into Wildbrumby Distillery, makers of schnapps, vodka and gin in a gorgeous setting. Partake of a tasting over lunch based on Austrian favourites, including their delicious apple strudel, then back to the resort. Perhaps stroll around the lake or down by the river, indulge in a spa treatment (own expense), or sit in your mountain view chalet and enjoy the views and quiet.

Head out to nearby Crackenback Farm for dinner.

After a leisurely start to Sunday, it's back to Jindabyne airport for a flight over the mountains and a grand entrance, landing at the Brown Brothers airstrip. First, a tasting and the chance to purchase your favourite wine to enjoy at home. Settle in to savour The Slow Lunch, a magnificent five-course degustation with matching wines at Patricia's Table Restaurant. Named in honour of the family matriarch Patricia Brown, Patricia's Table's relaxed and inviting atmosphere complements the fresh, local, seasonal produce. Soak up the ambience and greenery before flying back to Moorabbin, arriving by 5.00 pm.
