Outback Horizons

Your outback air safari begins with a flight to World Heritage-listed Mungo National Park in NSW. Learn about this unique ancient landscape and how the story of Mungo Lady and Mungo Man has changed the scientific and cultural history of the world. Explore the remarkable Walls of China, walk through the historic woodshed where the smell of sheep still lingers, view the ice-age footprint display in the Visitors Centre and enjoy a picnic lunch in the park. A relaxing afternoon followed by a 3-course dinner at the Lodge.

Overnight: Mungo Lodge

This morning, fly onto Broken Hill. Begin the day exploring the diversity of parks, gardens, mines and homes in this outback oasis. Lose yourself in some art galleries, such as the Pro Hart Gallery and Jack Absalom Museum. Both are known as Outback Legends. Visit Silver City Mint, home to the Big Picture, silver jewellery and samples of the ore mined in Broken Hill.

Head to nearby Silverton and meet some local artists at their quirky galleries before lunch and a cold drink at the famous Silverton Hotel, where Mad Max was filmed. Late afternoon drive to the spectacular Sculpture Symposium and enjoy nibbles and drinks. Take in the breathtaking landscape with incredible lighting effects as the sun sets. Drop into the Palace Hotel, made famous by Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, for a drink before dinner.

Overnight: Royal Exchange Hotel

Head to the top of the Line of Lode and visit the Miner's Memorial, a striking building that remembers more than 800 miners who have lost their lives on the job.

On to Innamincka, a tiny outback town in South Australia's remote northeast. Fly low over the Dig Tree, where the explorers Burke and Wills famously set up camp. On the ground, learn more about this pioneering pair and their ill-fated expedition.

Then it's on to Birdsville, flying over the spectacular Coongie Lakes area. Join a 4WD tour to Big Red, the stunning 40-metre sand dune on the edge of the Simpson Desert. Drink in the views as the sun sets with a glass in hand before dinner in one of Australia's most iconic pubs, the Birdsville Hotel.

Overnight: Birdsville Hotel

Take a low-level flight down the Diamantina River, Goyder Lagoon and the Warburton River before experiencing a spectacular flight over Lake Eyre North. Kati Thanda-Lake Eyre is an incredible destination, magnificent whether in its usual dry, flat, salt-plain state or during those rare periods when rains in the gulf have filtered down to create an oasis in the desert. Fly low and slow over the lake for some fantastic photos.

Stop into William Creek. Enjoy a refreshing ale with hearty outback fare for lunch at the William Creek Hotel. Fly south-east towards the Flinders Ranges and Balcanoona, where the late afternoon sun exposes the vibrant palette of colours on the mountains. Then, a 30-minute drive to Arkaroola Wilderness Resort. After dinner, enjoy incredible views of the stars and constellations in the clear, dark night sky at the resort's observatory (weather permitting).

Overnight: Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary, Mawson Room

Begin the final day with the famous Ridgetop Tour in an open-air 4WD vehicle to Sillers Lookout to experience the ruggedness and beauty of the Northern Flinders Ranges. The area is home to over 160 species of birds and the shy and endangered yellow-footed rock wallaby, along with craggy mountains, towering granite peaks, magnificent gorges and mysterious waterholes.

In the afternoon, it's time to return to home. Fly over Lake Frome en route, arriving in the early evening.
