Red Centre

Australia’s Red Centre is a magnificent, spiritual, striking region. International travellers make a point of visiting, but many Australians have not yet made the journey.

Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park holds Australia’s most iconic rock and over 30,000 years of indigenous history.

Alice Springs offers red gorges and steep chasms, indigenous artwork and stories of outback resilience.

Kings Canyon, in Watarrka National Park, features 100m high sandstone walls, palm-filled crevices and views that stretch across the desert.

Alice Springs and surrounds

Sometimes dismissed as “just” the closest town to Uluru, Alice Springs, known by traditional owners the Arrernte as Mparntwe, has much to offer.

In town, it’s mostly western history, with the Royal Flying Doctor Service, School of the Air and the Telegraph Station all showing how life in the centre of Australia was, and still is, carved out.

Outside of town the natural and indigenous history is extraordinary - Tjorita (West MacDonnell National Park), Rungutjirpa (Simpsons Gap), Udepata (Ellery Creek), Angkerle Atwatye (Standley Chasm) can all be explored with knowledgeable guides to provide an insight into the local area.

Kings Canyon

Kings Canyon, in Watarrka National Park, is one of the hidden secrets of the Red Centre, made more well known by the movie Priscilla, Queen of the Desert.

The Kings Canyon Rim Walk, best traversed early in the morning to avoid the desert heat, is magnificent. The 3 hour walk is quite challenging, particularly at the start, but well worth the effort if you can. As the sun rises, the sandstone turns a stunning array of oranges and reds.
