Flying the Outback

Your outback safari begins with a flight to World Heritage-listed Mungo National Park in NSW. Learn about this unique ancient landscape and how the story of Mungo Lady and Mungo Man has changed the scientific and cultural history of the world. Explore the remarkable Walls of China, walk through the historic woodshed where the smell of sheep's wool still lingers, view the ice-age footprint display in the Visitors Centre and enjoy a picnic lunch in the park.

Then, onto quirky Broken Hill. Visit Pro Hart Gallery, home to unique artworks and wildly painted Rolls Royces, and walk into a painting at Ando's Big Picture. Check in to your accommodation then drop into the Palace Hotel, made famous by Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, for a drink before dinner.

Visit the Line of Lode Miners Memorial, a dramatic structure that pays tribute to over 800 miners who have perished in the mines.

Stop in at Cameron Corner, at the intersection of three states – Queensland, New South Wales and South Australia. Learn about the Dingo/Wild Dog Barrier Fence, the world’s longest fence.

Then it's on to Birdsville, flying over the incredible Coongie Lakes area. Join a 4WD tour to Big Red, the stunning 40-metre sand dune on the edge of the Simpson Desert. Drink in the views as the sun sets with a glass in hand before dinner in one of Australia's most iconic pubs, the Birdsville Hotel.

Take a low-level flight down the Diamantina River, Goyder Lagoon and the Warburton River before experiencing a spectacular flight over Lake Eyre North. Kati Thanda - Lake Eyre is an incredible destination, magnificent whether in its usual dry, flat, salt-plain state or during those rare periods when rains in the gulf have filtered down to create an oasis in the desert. Fly low and slow over the lake for some fantastic photos.

Stop into William Creek. Enjoy a refreshing ale with hearty outback fare for lunch at the William Creek Hotel.

Back in the sky, fly to Parachilna in the heart of the Flinders Ranges. Experience a guided tour of the great fossil site at Nilpena Ediacara National Park, on the grounds of the former Nilpena Pastoral Station. One of the significant fossil sites in the world, the Ediacaran fossils preserve entire ecosystems of half-a-billion-year-old lifeforms, enabling scientists to gain an unparalleled glimpse into the origins of life on Earth.

On to Parachilna and the historic Prairie Hotel, built in 1876, an icon of the Flinders Ranges, renowned for its fabulous food, local lager and brilliant sunsets.

Overnight: Prairie Outback Lodge, outback room 

This morning tour through the spectacular Brachina and Parachilna gorges, two spectacular geological formations. Brachina Gorge is often called a geological trail through time, showcasing over 600 million years of Earth’s history. Look out for the cute and rare yellow-footed rock-wallaby.

Back at the Prairie, your final lunch together is their signature grazing lunch before rejoining your aircraft.

Fly over ancient Wilpena Pound and then journey home, completing your tour of our amazing outback.
